HAWTHORN FOOTBALL CLUB

The Hawthorn Football Club is a professional Australian rules football club based in Melbourne, Victoria, competing in the AFL, Australia's premier football competition. Established in 1902, Hawthorn has built a proud history as one of the most successful clubs in the league, with multiple AFL Premierships and a loyal fanbase. They play their home games at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Kinetic Stadium, Cazalys Stadium attracting large crowds to witness the thrilling action.

Known for their fast-paced, skillful football and strong team culture, the Hawks continue to be a formidable force in the AFL. The club places great emphasis on community engagement, creating initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion within the sport.

Hawthorn has been working closely with The Inclusion Project since 2022 to foster an inclusive environment for fans of all backgrounds, continuing this partnership into the 2024/25 season. Their commitment to accessibility and support for diverse communities remains a key part of their mission.

What loud noises can happen at the game?

At a Hawthorn Football Club game, you can expect a crowd full of energy and excitement. Key moments, such as a big goal or a game-changing tackle, are celebrated with booming sound effects, a raucous crowd, and the thrill of the goal siren echoing through the stadium.

The Hawthorn cheer squad will be in full voice, leading chants of "Hawthorn! Hawthorn!" as the players take to the field . Expect the sound of drum beats, claps, and foot stomping, all contributing to the intensity of the game.

What are average crowd sizes

In 2024 the average attendance of a Hawthorn game was 38,000 fans.

For the AFLW it is 2,300.





Is there any rounds that will be particularly loud?

This will be dependant on the opposition that is played and how close the contest is. Clubs such as Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton have huge followings so can expect an animated crowd. 

Hawthorn will be celebrating 100 years at Round 8 so there will be sure to be some extra elements at this game to others that might cause noise.  

How to get to a game?

How to get to the MCG

There are plenty of ways to get to the MCG:

Train: Jolimont Station (Hurstbridge and Mernda lines) and Richmond Station (Lilydale/Belgrave, Alamein, Glen Waverley, Frankston, Dandenong, Pakenham, Cranbourne or Sandringham lines) are close to the MCG, while you can also take a 20-minute walk from Flinders Street Station.

Tram: Route 75 (City – Vermont South), Route 45/48 (Docklands/City – North Balwyn) and Route 70 (Docklands/City – Surrey Hills) all stop near the ‘G.

Bus: Route 246 (Elsternwick – Clifton Hill) stops along Punt Road, which is a short walk from the ground.

Drive: Parking is usually available for $10 by EFTPOS at Yarra Park. Note that parking may reach capacity prior to match start. Alternative parking includes the MOPT and Wilson Parking locations nearby.

Taxi: Taxi ranks will be available near the ground. 

 

How to get to Kinetic Stadium:

Kinetic Stadium in Frankston is accessible via several transport options from Melbourne:​

By Train: The most straightforward method is to take the Frankston Line from Melbourne's city center to Frankston Station. Trains depart regularly, with intervals of 5–10 minutes during peak times and 10–20 minutes during off-peak periods. The journey spans approximately 43 kilometers and takes about 1 hour and 7 minutes. ​

Upon arrival at Frankston Station, Kinetic Stadium is roughly a 9 to 10-minute walk away. Exiting via Young Street and turning left will lead you directly to the stadium. ​

By Bus: Alternatively, you can opt for bus services that connect Melbourne to Frankston. For instance, Bus Route 901, known as the Frankston - Melbourne Airport (SMARTBUS Service), operates between Melbourne Airport and Frankston, passing through various suburbs. While primarily an airport service, it can be utilised for travel between Melbourne and Frankston. ​

By Car: Driving from Melbourne's Central Business District to Kinetic Stadium involves taking the M1 and M3 freeways, with an estimated travel time of about one hour, depending on traffic conditions. Parking is available on surrounding streets, as well as at the Frankston Foreshore and Frankston Arts Centre.
